Untitled

The (Takashi Murakami- invented) icon Mr DOB grins playfully at the viewer from the canvas in a Sonic- the- Hedgehog blue. Mr DOB is a slick invented fantasy in the form of a visual pleasure shot, designed to amuse, tickle and entertain. Seemingly innocuous, it is however a sharp, tongue-in-cheek, subversive comment on consumer culture. The intentional resemblance to Disney’s Mickey Mouse alludes to the hegemonic power behind an invented pop culture symbol, mass reproduced to legitimise instant gratification and the pleasure seeking behaviour of modern society. The artist has spray painted the work in a graffiti style, serving to reinforce the subversion.
