Rousseau released to the sky

An imitative tribute to Henri Rousseau’s Myself: Portrait Landscape, the artist has embellished the painting with heavy and familiar references, making it his own. The little girl in the centre of the painting eyes the viewer with an unflinching gaze, and is a representative portrait of the artist’s own daughter- the girl’s hairstyle, uniform and Hello Kitty emblazoned satchel being distinct Japanesemotifs. The multiple spectres of the painter Rousseau floating unencumbered by gravity, time, or space is a conjured dreamscape, hinting at the influence of Surrealism and the latent meanings waiting to be unleashed from the the subconscious. Viewed as a whole, the work boldly presents a layered self-narrative as a nuanced, idealised fiction: impetuous, confident and unapologetic.
