Metamorphosis of Colours

Stepping into an exhibition of Paresh Maity’s works is like entering a hushed, intimate gathering where many are invited, but few are chosen to share its secrets. The artist seems to prefer close-up views of faces in his work, this lending an intimate, personal feel to the collection. There is a sense of an invitation to mystery contained in the knowing glances and heavy-lidded, lowered gazes that feature prominently in his latest series titled “Metamorphosis of Colours”.

Paresh Maity readily acknowledges the influence of Picasso on his work. Abstract geometry abounds on his canvas- it seems as though the entire canvas is made up of planes and angles. These facets provide different viewpoints, creating depth and layer to the figures in his work. This depth is enhanced by the use of warm, earthy tones of colour, which suffuse the canvas. Paresh Maity highlights that the focus on the side profile, the use of primary colours, and the use of linearity in his work, directly reflects the Indian style of painting.

As the only Indian artist invited to present a solo exhibition at Art Stage 2014, Paresh Maity’s art may be expected to represent his home country. A lift of the curtain for a quick glance at his art, will not disappoint.
