This work was presented as a framed newspaper article, beckoning viewers to approach the work and ‘read the news’. Presenting the artist’s tongue-in-cheek point of view, the work is literally ‘fake news’, a comic-like pastiche of thought and thinking, utilising and (at the same time) subverting a traditional form of media, the black and white print newspaper. Themes of history, legacy and memory are immediately brought to mind by the use of the instantly recognisable image of Lee Kuan Yew, emblazoned across the piece mimicking a propaganda poster. The thin paper lends a sense of ephemerality to the work, as just another opinion that will pass with time.
Skilfully handling sensitive subject matter with a humorous yet critical hand, the artist is unafraid and bold in presenting subject matter indigenous to Southeast Asia; imbuing a playfulness in the experience of the work, which at the same time, challenges the viewer’s expectations and his or her reliance on traditional media as disseminators of truth.
